América Te Hablo de Ernesto (America, I Tell you about Ernesto)
An Evening of Latin American Poetry and Songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s
MusicaLatitudes

Friday, February 19, 8 pm

Music Performance/MCC Theater

With the purpose to celebrate peace, love, and social justice, MusicaLatitudes came together to perform contentious Latin American poetry and songs from the 60s, 70s, and 80s in memory of the 80th birthday of Ernesto "Che" Guevara, a man who represents the failed Latin American revolutionary movement of the 60s. The poetry, selected from the recently found and published Che Guevara's Green Notebook, celebrates his bequest and human sensibility, the same one that today guides the new awakening of Latin America in its search for its definitive socio-political and cultural independence. In Spanish and English.. Tickets $5 students / $15 general. Contact the A.S. Ticket Office at 805-893-2064. Co-sponsored by the Unión Salvadoreña de Estudiantes Universitarios.

IN ENGLISH:
Among the objects found Ernesto “Che” Guevara´s backpack at the time of his arrest in Bolivia in 1967, were his world-renowned dairy and a green notebook containing a series of poems that did not arise greater interest in his captors.  Shortly after Che was executed in La Higuera, on September 9, 1967, his belongings were deposited in a safe box at the Bolivian Military Intelligence Headquarters.

One morning of 2002, Jesus Anaya, editor and old friend of Mexican writer Paco Ignacio Taibo II, showed him a packet with photocopies of several handwritten texts.  It was obvious that it was Che Guevara’s handwriting.  The path of the green notebook was a mystery.  They were poems that Che had copied himself two years before his death; a selection of poems by Cesar Vallejo (Peru), Pablo Neruda (Chile), Nicolas Guillen (Cuba), and Leon Felipe (Spain).  It was the poetry that Che carried in the backpack during his endeavor in Latin America.  His personal anthology…

MusicaLatitudes took this book as a basis to prepare a Latin American concert to remember one of the exemplary men in the history of the continent.  Poetry and songs come together to celebrate his bequest, which nowadays guides the new awakening of Latin America in its search for its definitive socio-political and cultural independence.

Three singers, three actors and eight musicians on stage, will be performing a selection of poems from Che Guevara Green Book and Latin American songs from the struggles of the continent through the past few decades.

MusicaLatitudes invites you to join us in this celebration on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at eight o'clock in the evening in Oxnard´s new cultural scene: MusicaLatitudes Stage, at 1681 Beacon Place, in Oxnard.  For reservations, please call 1-800-7924855.  For more information, visit www.musicalatitudes.com.
